From Learner to Leader: Cecilia’s Story of Perseverance and Pride

Cecilia has been a long-time guest of POC for over 10 years. When her three children were young, they participated in POC's ICompete Youth and Family Program. At that time, Cecilia was not working outside the home and attended Harper ESL classes at the Community Resource Center in Palatine. However, as the family's circumstances changed, she needed to find employment, which she successfully did.
The family has faced many ups and downs throughout the years, but they continue to persevere. Cecilia has returned to ESL classes through D211 Continuing Education at Palatine High School and attends ESL conversation groups in POC’s Learning Lab three times a week. Groups discuss U.S. history, culture and traditions, current events, and Palatine and surrounding suburbs. Her English has improved immensely.
Cecilia is a strong advocate for her children. As the mother, she demonstrates incredible patience and understanding while balancing social, emotional, and medical needs. She has a big heart and is always willing to help other students in the group.Today marks the 10th anniversary of her becoming a U.S. Citizen. Congratulations to Cecilia for all her accomplishments!
The Learning Lab benefits from the support of volunteers. This year, 23 volunteers provided weekly assistance to our clients. With nearly 2,300 hours of service valued at $75,000, we could not fulfill the mission of POC without them. Volunteers provide a welcoming and safe space for individuals to pursue their dreams and goals. Many of our volunteers are retired professionals from fields such as nursing, teaching, and engineering, or they may have devoted their lives to raising families as "domestic engineers," eager to give back to their communities.
