We recently welcomed this award-winning Chinese artist to our English Conversation Classes. Yanqi presented one of his paintings and explained its meaning. “After I finished speaking at my first POC conversation club meeting, I saw the teacher, volunteers, and fellow participants smiling at me with friendly, encouraging gazes; in that moment, I felt truly supported and welcomed.
As an artist from China, I deeply appreciate the importance of being part of a community where people are eager to learn from one another. Participating in POC activities has given me the chance to meet people from diverse backgrounds and reflect on the value of cultural understanding.
These connections fill me with hope, reminding me that despite our linguistic and cultural differences, we share many fundamental human experiences and aspirations.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about getting involved with or supporting POC?
I would encourage people to approach others with curiosity, respect, and an open mind. Take the time to listen to people’s stories and understand their perspectives rather than making assumptions based on their backgrounds.
How has your experience with POC changed you?
I am deeply grateful to my neighbor for introducing my wife and me to POC. Although I haven't been part of the group for long, every interaction has made me feel welcome, encouraged, and valued; I am especially touched by how Kelli consistently shares YANQI ZHAI OFFICIAL WEBSITE and introduces my work to everyone.
Each time I speak English at the Conversation Club, I gain a deeper understanding of the importance of community, human connection, and mutual support. Coming from a different cultural background, I have personally experienced the rich exchange and learning that can occur when people feel accepted and respected.
